THE PROCESS
Originally slated as an addition/remodel to an existing quirky cabin, this project quickly evolved into a new build when it was discovered that the exising cabin was actually built over the property line. Instead of seeing this as a hiccup, the owners embraced the opportunity to design something new that was more thoughfully placed on the site, using advanced building techniques that would endure for decades to come.

After spending time on the site together, we identified an area with a gently sloping hillside that the home could tuck into. With strong Westerly winds as our largest challenge to overcome, a 'T' shaped plan evolved, using a one-story portion as the main living area that would also block the entryway and driveway from the winter winds. The primary bedroom was placed on the second level, up the hillside for the best vantage point to views of the Indian Peaks beyond.
The owners wisely chose to invest in a fully air-sealed building envelope to protect from the harsh weather, and fireproof exterior insulation and siding to protect against future wildfire threats. The structure is further fire-protected by gypsum board under any exterior wood finish. Radiant heating provides the base temperature control, with a high-efficiency wood stove adding that extra layer of cozy heat in the winter.
